Player Spotlight – Sean Oslund

I started coaching Sean Oslund in the summer last year and it’s been exciting to see his interest in the game grow and his skills reach new levels. Sean has been consistent in his training schedule and always plays with a high level of focus and enthusiasm. He’s also got a sharp mind and reads the game well which will help him compete at higher levels in high school and college. Below is more about Sean’s journey in the game and I look forward to him developing into one of the top junior players in Minnesota.

What led you to get into tennis?

When I first started playing tennis, it was originally just because my dad wanted something to do and so I would go hit with him. Over time I realized that I really enjoyed the time we spent hitting together and so I joined our middle school team, and now I play almost daily.

What do you like about the game?

I love how tennis allows you to meet new people. Just over a year ago, I met Lucky for the first time and now we play together all the time. I also really enjoy how complex the game is.

What’s your favorite memory in tennis?

I really don’t have a favorite moment because I always look forward to going out and hitting.  Although, if I had to choose one, I would say the first time I won a USTA tournament. I’ve looked back at that moment and realized how much I’ve improved, which is my goal.

What are your goals over the next year?

Over the next year, I would like to continue improving and competing in more tournaments than in the past. I would also like to just keep enjoying tennis and meeting new people through the sport.

What areas of your game are you working on?

Currently, I am working on my backhand and serve as much as I can. Over a short amount of time, my serve has gotten much better because of slight adjustments. I’m also working on my mental game. I used to only think about winning but now I’m looking forward and seeing how I played and what I need to work on.

What coaching tip has helped you the most?

The tip that has helped me the most over a long period of time is to just hit the ball freely and not worry about all of the little nuisances. More recently, Harsh told me not to worry about the outcome of matches which I think has helped with nerves a lot.

What have you learned through tennis?

Through tennis I’ve learned how to control emotions and just enjoy things the way they are. Recently, I’ve started coaching which is helping me learn how to talk to younger kids and to hold myself to a schedule, which is great experience for the future.

What would you like to share with other players who may be considering playing and learning tennis?

If I had to say one thing to someone considering to play tennis, I would say just try it. I didn’t know just a few years ago how many friends and great people I would meet and the amount of fun I would have. If you don’t like tennis after trying it, that’s fine, but at least you tried.

It’s wonderful to read how Sean got inspired to play by starting with his dad and his advice on trying the game and enjoying the experiences that come with it. I look forward to supporting Sean’s continued enjoyment and progress in the game and to helping him achieve his goals.

Best,

Harsh
